If you have already registered for a paper presentation time slot, then please double check that you are the only person registered for that time slot. If not, then it is your responsibility to resolve the issue: discuss this with the other student(s) who enrolled for that time slot, then let Dr. Cotterell know who to unenroll.

7.2. Activity

7.2.1. Introduction

Duration: TBD

You may remember the following mentioned near the top of the Milestone 0: IRB Training page:

The University of Georgia is committed to the ethical principles for the protection of human subjects in research as set forth in the Belmont Report,

The Belmont Report was very likely an important part of your IRB training, as it identifies basic ethical principles and guidelines surrounding issues arising from the conduct of research with human subjects. These issue can and do arise in HCI research, both inside and outside of academia and especially in usability studies.

7.2.2. Breakout Groups

Important

RANDOMIZE: Please move around to different tables and form a random group for this activity.

Important

EQUAL-COLUMN SEATING PREFERRED: Make every effort to have the same number of groups in each of the three columns of tables that are present in Dawson Hall 116.

  1. Quickly introduce yourselves to each other, if you don’t already know each other.

  2. Pick a group representative. This person will be responsible for posting your breakout group’s response on Piazza before breakout group work ends for this activity.

  3. Help your group representative respond to the following in a followup discussion to Piazza @24.

    1. List the names of your breakout group members.

    2. Depending on where your group is sitting, your group will be assigned a letter (one of A, B, or C) by the instructor. Respond the prompt below using the information in the table that corresponds to your group’s letter.

      LETTER

      PRINCIPLE

      REQUIREMENT

      A

      Respect for Persons

      Informed Consent

      B

      Beneficence

      Assessment of Risks and Benefits

      C

      Justice

      Selection of Subjects

      1. Simply include “LETTER. PRINCIPLE and REQUIREMENT” for this part of your post, replacing each part appropriately.

      2. Briefly define your group’s principle and your group’s requirement, assuming the target audience has not read the Belmont Report.

      3. Describe one example (e.g., situation(s) or scenario(s)) from the report where your group’s principle and/or requirement is violated. Be sure to explain why and/or how it is a violation with respect to the definitions your group provided.

      4. Describe one example (e.g., situation(s) or scenario(s)) related to a real or hypothetical HCI, UX, or computer UI-related study NOT from the report where your group’s principle and/or requirement is violated. Be sure to explain why and/or how it is a violation with respect to the definitions your group provided. Do a little research.

        • If your example is based on a real study, then please provide a reference to that study.

        • If your example is hypothetical, then please make every effort to avoid mal-intent (i.e., the researchers do not set out to violate the principle or requirement on purpose).

      5. What steps might the researchers involved in your last example take to adjust their study to meet your group’s principle and/or requirement?

  4. Look at and reply to the posts that other groups made.

7.2.3. After Breakout Groups

Duration: TBD

  1. Look at some of the Piazza posts as a class.

7.2.4. After Class

  1. Before 11:55PM today, individually comment on another group’s post by replying to their followup discussion in Piazza @24.

    Comments

Please keep the comments polite and constructive. In addition to whatever else you want to write, please comment on one aspect of a group’s post that you like and one aspect that you think needs improvement (e.g., you find that something is unclear or you don’t understand a justification). As always, be sure to provide a brief justification for each.

  2. Continue reading the Foundations module, start reading the Usability module, and make sure you’re aware of current assignments and their due dates.

  3. Enjoy the long weekend. There is no class on MON 09-06 in observance of Labor Day.
