8.2. Activity¶
Duration: \(\sim\) 5-10 minutes
You may remember the following mentioned near the top of the Milestone 0: IRB Training page:
The University of Georgia is committed to the ethical principles for the protection of human subjects in research as set forth in the Belmont Report, including Respect for Persons, Beneficence and Justice.
The Belmont Report was very likely an important part of your IRB training, as it identifies basic ethical principles and guidelines surrounding issues arising from the conduct of research with human subjects. These issue can and do arise in HCI research, especially in usability studies.
8.2.1. Breakout Rooms¶
Duration: \(\sim\) 15-20 minutes
Quick introductions, if needed.
As a group, respond to the following in a followup discussion here.
Depending on your Breakout Room number (visible near the top of Zoom when no one is screen sharing), respond to one of these:
- Groups / Rooms 1, 4, 7:
Briefly summarize the principle, “Respect for Persons,” and the, “Informed Consent,” requirement, then describe two situations or scenarios where this principle may have been violated and why. The first situation may be from the report, if one is mentioned, but the second situation not be directly mentioned in the report – do a little research. Please clearly label this part of your post.
- Groups / Rooms 2, 5, 8:
Briefly summarize the principle, “Beneficence,” and the, “Assessment of Risks and Benefits,” requirement, then describe two situations or scenarios where this principle may have been violated and why. The first situation may be from the report, if one is mentioned, but the second situation not be directly mentioned in the report – do a little research. Please clearly label this part of your post.
- Groups / Rooms 3, 6, 9:
Briefly summarize the principle, “Justice,” and the, “Selection of Subjects,” requirement, then describe two situations or scenarios where this principle may have been violated and why. The first situation may be from the report, if one is mentioned, but the second situation not be directly mentioned in the report – do a little research. Please clearly label this part of your post.
You may recall from training that some human-subjects research is exempt, i.e., it is exempt from the laws, regulations, codes, or institutional guidance that govern the research. Find UGA’s IRB Document
UGAHRP-033-2titled, “Exempt Research,” then copy/paste sections 3.1 – 3.3 (except the very last sentence about the appendix) into your group’s followup post. Please bold section 3.1 in your followup post.
Pick a group representative. This person will briefly share your group’s conceptual model to the class. No pressure, seriously!
Respond to other followup discussions until the breakout rooms end.
