11.2. Activity¶
11.2.1. Introduction¶
Guidelines are low-level focused advice about good practices and cautions against dangers [M2:1]. When it comes to design-related guidelines, two popular and related choices include:
Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is one with a lot of impact.
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) provided by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) through its Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI).
In this DDQ, we are going to discuss Section 508 and its various components:

Presented as government standards, the revised 508 guidelines intent to:
eliminate barriers in information and communication technology (ICT);
make available new opportunities for people with disabilities; and to
encourage development of technologies that will help achieve (1) and (2).
According to these guidelines, any ICT that is procured, developed, maintained, or used by agencies (i.e, any agency or department of the United States as defined in 44 U.S.C. 3502, and the United States Postal Service.) shall conform to the Revised 508 Standards.
Even if a company or other agency does not meet the definition of agency presented above, its still beneficial to conform to these guidelines as compliance increases overall usability of ICT.
